Hospital Foundation funds 100% of c-arm unit for Mills Memorial Hospital
The addition of the $230,000 c-arm unit will improve existing medical services and allow physicians to perform procedures that patients now have to travel out of town for. The C-arm services will be used by men, women and children of all ages from across the Northwest region. Having the best, most up to date equipment will result in an estimated increase of 30% availability of medical services in Terrace. It will have an impact on the local economy as people will travel to Terrace for medical treatment that they now have to go to larger centres for. There is a potential for attracting more medical specialists to practice in our region.
The addition of a C-arm imaging unit will allow physicians to perform a variety of surgical, diagnostic imaging, and minimally invasive surgical procedures. The C-arm is a highly complex piece of equipment which uses x-rays and produces a 'live' image feed which is displayed on a TV screen. Physician’s guide surgical instruments while watching the instrument being driven on a live x-ray machine.
The c-arm fluoroscopic x-ray systems are used for a variety of diagnostic imaging and minimally invasive surgical procedures. In the operating room (OR), they help in visualizing kidney drainage, abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, percutaneous valve replacements, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, gastroenterology, neuro stimulation, orthopedics, pain management and neurology procedures. Included in the mobile C-arm category are mini C-arms, which are smaller systems used in clinics for sports medicine, orthopedic and podiatric imaging.
